Critical for eCommerce sites: most AI crawlers cannot execute JavaScript. Product data that exists only in client-side rendered content is invisible to AI platforms. Server-side rendering is non-negotiable.

Here is a recommended robots.txt configuration that maximizes AI search visibility while optionally blocking training data collection:

Anthropic’s Claude bots offer granular robots.txt control that separates training (ClaudeBot) from search (Claude-SearchBot), giving eCommerce sites more precise control than most other AI platforms. While 600+ websites, including Perplexity, Anthropic, and Stripe, have adopted it, no major AI platform has officially announced support, and testing by OtterlyAI found no evidence that it improves AI retrieval or boosts traffic. Treat it as a low-effort signal, not a priority.

The program is live in the U.S. with rolling onboarding. Any merchant can apply at chatgpt.com/merchants by submitting business details, primary product categories, and integration preferences. Upon approval, merchants receive a secure HTTPS endpoint for pushing feeds and authentication credentials. OpenAI published a formal Product Feed Specification supporting CSV, TSV, XML, and JSON formats with feed refreshes accepted every 15 minutes, dramatically faster than Google Shopping’s 24-hour default.
